BioNumerics Version 4.50 - Tackling the challenges of massive databases and Internet security

Sint-Martens-Latem, Belgium, December 16, 2005 – Applied Maths BVBA today announces the release of Version 4.50 of its premium software suite BioNumerics. The BioNumerics software provides a universal platform for databasing and analysis of 1D patterns, 2D gels, phenotype arrays, and DNA/protein sequences. The software provides powerful databasing, integrated networking and a wide range of data mining, clustering, identification, and statistical applications. BioNumerics is designed for lab-wide databasing and analysis of biodata in laboratories of any size and is in use in thousands of research sites worldwide. In addition, BioNumerics and its server application 'BioNumerics Server' are the cornerstones for numerous national and international research projects and epidemiological surveillance networks. PulseNet, a worldwide surveillance network for foodborne bacterial pathogens is by far the biggest achievement with BioNumerics, connecting many hundreds of public health labs in the United States, Canada, Europe, Latin America, the Far East, Australia and New Zealand.

To cope with the challenges of ever growing databases and data security issues in sensitive (clinical) environments, Applied Maths has put significant efforts in new database features. These include query-based database viewing, dynamic fetching, full 256-bit encryption of Internet transferred data, and password security tools. Further improvements to managing databases of extreme size include fast identification tools for character and sequence-based data and a fully featured local BLAST tool.

Applied Maths has also completed its range of applications that can be handled by the BioNumerics suite by adding a new module for analyzing X-Y data such as kinetic readings ("Trend data"). The module offers a large number of curve fit models and specialized analysis tools for X-Y data such as kinetic measurements.

With BioNumerics version 4.5, a more flexible way of adding functionality has been launched through the "Plugins" option. Plugins offer script-based specialist functionality to customers in a fast and release-independent way. New releases of Plugin tools can be automatically downloaded and installed from Applied Maths' website.

Besides these general innovations, BioNumerics version 4.5 offers a large number of more specific improvements and additions, which are listed per module in the "New Features" documentation sheet.
