Show names of selected entries in an MDS

Question:

In the graphical representation of a Multi-Dimensional Scaling (MDS), it is possible to show the names of entries. However, this gets kind of chaotic when working with many entries. Is it possible to only show the names of selected entries in the MDS representation? This would make the representation look a bit more orderly.

Answer:

This can be accomplished via an easy work-around:

  • Select File > Install / Remove plugins and install the Database Tools plugin
  • Add a new (empty) information field to the database
  • Make a selection of entries that you would like to see named
  • Select Database > Move field content
  • On the left side of the popup window, select the field that you want to display and on the right side, select the new empty field
  • Check "Current selection only" and press OK
  • In the Comparison window, select the new field
  • Choose Layout > Use field as key
  • Display the keys in the PCA or MDS representation
