The Geographical Mapping plugin in BioNumerics

This plugin is a free add-on to the BioNumerics software. It requires the Database Sharing Tools module to run.

Geographical information is obtained from database fields in the BioNumerics database. This can be stored as names of populated places (typically cities) or latitude and longitude coordinates. The coordinate system is more exact and is therefore to be preferred if spreading of a disease or outbreak is to be monitored in small areas, for example within a city. If not all coordinate information is available, coordinates and location names can be combined. Country information can be provided as a separate database field.

Selected database entries with geographical information are shown as bars on the map. Optionally, an information field for which field states have been defined can be used to color the bars according to the colors assigned to the field states. The height of the bars can be set proportional to the number of entries found in a location.

Database fields can be selected to be shown if the user clicks on a bar on the map; this information is displayed in a pop-up window. Selections in the database can be displayed on the map and conversely, selections made on the map can be transfered to the database.

In case geographical information is only provided as location names, there may be several alternatives with the same name. Such conflicts are displayed and the user can choose the correct location among the alternatives.
